As someone who was recently tagged by Davenport, it's difficult not to take a little pleasure in all this.
I do think calling for the guy's job is an extreme reaction. As a columnist he's got to put his ideas out there. As a 'conservative' columnist he's got an agenda to advance and, in the conservative thinkers who are his fans, a group of people he's more or less obligated to satisfy, people who aren't necessarily interested in reading about his kids or his dog but prefer to have their own views reinforced. It's the same thing for 'liberal' columnists, by the way, who are expected by their readers to go to battle against the right each and every week. It's kind of a clusterf**k.
But I'm digging on the integration of media and also the level of critique we're seeing here.

I have no issue with Davenport's conservative philosophy. I am a firm believer in not only the right but the necessity for people to fall on different sides of issues.
What I do not understand is why the N&R continues to allow Davenport to use fabricated historical quotes and to misapply the ones that are accurate. Surely they can find a local conservative writer who is more capable.

I'm with Patrick. I've noticed a distrubing trend in some conservative writers of late, in that they seem to have a problem with the truth. It's as if they think the end justifies any means. I'm not a religious man of any sort, but doesn't their bible command, "Thou shalt not bear false witness." Or did I dream that up?
That's been a tactic of the right for a long time. Limbaugh? He's been spewing shit since the '80s. When I was in Louisiana David Duke was writing opinion columns -- and people published them.
Another example: In the magazine Jordan Green interviewed a member of the National Socialist Party -- Nazis, who like it or not are part of the extreme right: they're reactionaries which by definition makes them a few clicks to the right past conservative.
